Baby Shower Gift Guide

I'm often asked what gifts to get for a baby shower.

But, when a baby is born so is a mother and I prefer to give gifts that acknowledge and support the enormous life transition she is going through.

So this gift-guide is all celebrating becoming a parent. Here are my top ideas arranged by budget, not a onesie or wipe warmer in sight!

$10 - $20 Food

If you are on a budget food is absolutely the best gift for a new mum! If you've left it until the last minute, fresh fruit is usually well received, or some high-energy snacks to keep beside the feeding chair. If you have a little more time, throw together a quick soup. Search my blog for recipes if you need suggestions.

Of course, you can spend a lot more on food, for example, a hamper or meal delivery, and food will always be well appreciated.

Just make sure you check in with dietary needs first.

$15 - $30 Newborn Mothers book

The last thing newborn mothers need is another book.

Endless experts and advice undermine your intuition and confidence. Information overload doesn't help when you feel isolated, exhausted and overwhelmed. What you really need is a hot cup of tea, a good night’s sleep and a laundry fairy. (Sadly, these things can't fit inside a book!)

But Newborn Mothers is about doing less, not more. It answers your real questions about the transformation to motherhood including...

  • Is baby brain real? Are you actually losing your mind?

  • You heard it takes a village to raise a child, but what does that look like in the 21st century? And how do you build yours?

  • You were told these are the best days of your life. Are you the only one finding it this hard.

$30 - $50 Pyjamas

I love gifts that encourage new mums to rest in bed and beautiful pyjamas make it feel so much more luxurious to lounge around all day! PJs, slippers, loungewear or a robe will all send an valuable message, and answering the door in your PJs is a sure way to set the tone with visitors.

$80 - $120 Cleaning

Not the most glamorous gift but a couple of hours of cleaning can be a game changer, and it's often something mums have trouble buying for themselves. Just check with the recipient first as some people feel anxious about others cleaning their homes.

$150 - $200 Postpartum massage

If you can find someone who does home visits this is very special gift for a very special parent! Maybe your massage voucher could include a voucher from you to come and hold the baby so she can fully relax. You can find postpartum massage specialists in the Newborn Mothers Directory.

$200 - $300 e-Book Reader

So much better than scrolling! Many hours a day are spent feeding and holding a new baby, and an eBook reader means that parents can have some entertainment to pass the time whilst minimising blue light, reading without turning the light on and turning the page without distracting their baby. I like Kobo eReaders because they make it really easy to borrow library books for free.
