2024 holiday gift guide for newborn mothers

By Antonia Anderson

The holidays are close, and mothers are likely already planning and preparing for the season’s emotional and physical demands. But it’s possible the rest of the family isn’t putting in the same effort. The gifts we often receive as caregivers don’t always reflect the depth of who we are and the love and effort we put into every day.

We’re not here to suggest fluffy pink slippers or generic scented candles. Instead, these are thoughtful, intentional gifts that recognise the complexity of motherhood.

Whether you’re looking to treat yourself or find something meaningful for a newborn mother or doula, we’ve curated this list with intention and care. Read through these ideas, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you want!

Nourishing postpartum tea

A strong, hot cuppa is a simple but powerful self-care ritual, and postpartum teas—blended with herbs like red raspberry leaf, nettle, and fenugreek—can help support recovery. A carefully selected postpartum tea set, perhaps paired with a beautiful mug, is a lovely gift for those quiet moments of reflection and simply finding calm in the middle of the day. Even better if you promise to stop by for a chat, hold the baby and pour the tea!

Food, glorious food

Food is one of the most thoughtful and practical gifts you can give a new mum, and it doesn’t have to cost much. When time and energy are in short supply, the gift of nourishment can be restorative. Fresh fruit is often appreciated to balance the freezer stash, and high-energy snacks like chocolate and nuts can be kept beside the feeding chair. If you’ve got a little more time, a simple homemade soup can be a beautiful gesture. Need inspiration? Here are a few of our most popular recipes:

If you want to put together something special, a meal hamper or postpartum meal delivery subscription is a fantastic option. Either way, food is a gift that keeps on giving!

Newborn Mothers book

The last thing newborn mothers need is another book, but this book is a bestseller for a reason!

Endless experts and advice undermine your intuition and confidence. Information overload doesn't help when you feel isolated, exhausted and overwhelmed.  But Newborn Mothers is about doing less, not more. It answers questions about the transformation to motherhood, including...

  • Is baby brain real? Are you actually losing your mind?

  • You heard it takes a village to raise a child, but what does that look like in the 21st century? And how do you build yours?

  • You were told these are the best days of your life. Are you the only one finding it this hard?

Postpartum bath soak

After birth, the body deserves serious care and relaxation, and a soothing postpartum bath soak can help. Look for blends that promote healing and relaxation, using ingredients like lavender, calendula, and Epsom salts. A warm bath can relieve sore muscles and help calm the mind, offering a moment of peace amidst the busyness of new motherhood. Bonus points if it comes in a beautifully packaged jar or a reusable bag! Include a voucher offering to hold the baby during the bath so she can have a really good soak.

Loungewear or sleepwear

There’s nothing quite like the gift of rest. Snuggly pyjamas can make lounging in bed feel like a true luxury. Plus, answering the door in comfy loungewear sets the tone for visitors, reminding them that rest is not only encouraged, it’s necessary. Treat a new mum to luxurious PJs or a soft robe to help her ease into rest, and offer to provide childcare so she can really check out.

Cleaning

There might be flashier gifts, but a couple of hours of professional cleaning can be a game-changer. Between the physical exhaustion of new motherhood and the increased mental load, cleaning is often the last thing a new mum has time or energy for (and rightly so). Check with the recipient beforehand, as some might feel anxious about having someone clean their home, but for many, this will be an incredible relief.

High-quality, leak-proof reusable cup

Warm drinks are comforting, and staying hydrated is essential, especially for breastfeeding mums or anyone constantly on the go. A high-quality, insulated cup keeps drinks warm for hours. Choose a design that can be completely sealed and thrown into a nappy bag without spilling. A reusable cup is a practical, eco-friendly gift that can be used for many years.

Postpartum massage

A postpartum massage is a gift that will truly support a new mum's body and mind. If you can find someone who offers home visits, even better—it’s a level of comfort and relaxation that feels both luxurious and deeply nurturing. To make the experience even more special, consider including a voucher for yourself to hold the baby during the massage so she can fully unwind without any interruptions. Postpartum massage specialists are listed on the Newborn Mothers Directory.

e-Book reader

An e-reader can be a real lifesaver during those hours spent feeding and holding a newborn, perfect for new parents who want to unwind while staying present during contact naps or long feeding sessions. Unlike reading on a mobile phone, an e-reader minimises blue light and offers a more relaxing alternative to doom-scrolling and distracting notifications. On an  e-reader, you can also read in the dark without disturbing your bab, and turn the page with just a tap or a click, minimising the noise of turning paper pages that seems to distract babies so much. A Kobo is a great good choice in Australia as it makes borrowing library books a breeze. If she already has an e-book reader, a gift voucher for e-books is always appreciated.

Baby carrier

A comfortable, ergonomic baby carrier is a lifesaver for parents who want to keep their baby close while having their hands free. Whether a soft-structured carrier or a stretchy wrap, a good carrier helps distribute the baby’s weight evenly, reducing strain on the body. Look for one that’s adjustable, breathable, and designed for extended use, and it’ll quickly become a go-to item for everyday life.

Postpartum care package

A well-thought-out postpartum care package is the gift of self-care delivered right to a new mum’s door. Look for packages that include things like postpartum pads, soothing sprays, herbal teas, nipple creams, and other natural, healing products that help a new mum recover from childbirth. These curated care packages can help her feel nurtured and supported as she heals—both physically and emotionally—during the weeks after birth.

Cozy weighted blanket

Weighted blankets have become incredibly popular, especially for those who may be dealing with postpartum anxiety or disrupted sleep. A weighted blanket provides gentle pressure that can mimic the feeling of being hugged, helping to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Perfect for cozying up on the couch or winding down at the end of a long day, this thoughtful gift helps a new mum find a sense of calm and comfort. Keep in mind that while a weighted lap blanket is a great choice for mum to use on her own, it should never be used on a baby or in a co-sleeping environment.
